In 1960, IMA's six founding member agencies joined together to form INTERCHURCH MEDICAL ASSISTANCE, INC.® to provide medicines and supplies to church medical missions and emergency health care programs around the world. In collaboration, their efforts proved to be more effective than they could be individually.
Partnerships are as important today as they were in the beginning. IMA World Health is focused on advancing health and healing the world over – but we can't do it alone. In our long history we've learned that the most successful international public health programs make the best use of true partnerships, utilizing the strengths and resources of a variety of highly skilled people and organizations.
Today, our work has expanded to include supporting entire health care systems through training, education, management, modeling and oversight. IMA currently has 11 member agencies (providing guidance and funding) that work together to meet the tremendous health care needs in developing nations.

According to the World Health Organization, faith-based organizations (FBOs) provide between 30%-70% of health care in developing countries. FBOs also play a crucial role in health education.
Throughout Africa, faith-based health providers have come together to form faith-affiliated networks that collaborate to improve the health and well-being of the people in their communities. IMA works in close partnership with FBOs to assess the strengths and needs of in-country partners, to strengthen local leadership and existing health care structures and to provide sustainable assistance.
