Sermon Guides the topic of presentation at Washington Conference

IMA Staffer Erika Pearl to discuss Sermon Guides at the American Public Health Association Meeting

IMA World Health Program Officer Erika Pearl will be speaking at the 139^th Annual Meeting of the American Public Health Association  entitled Health Communities Promote Healthy Minds & Bodies.  The meeting will be open from October 29 – November 2, 2011 at the Washington Convention Center in Washington DC.

Pearl will be discussing the uses of the Sermon Guide, a tool for religious leaders in Tanzania, Rwanda, and Liberia to promote behavior change in their communities leading to a reduction in maternal and child mortality.

 In Rwanda, 7,971 guides were distributed and at least 180 Muslim and 2,000 Christian leaders received Sermon Guides. In Tanzania, 286 Muslim and 314 Christian Sermon Guides were distributed. Since the project’s inception in 2010, over 44,000 people have been reached by the teachings of these guides in Rwanda, Tanzania and Liberia.
