Leader of NTD Control Program Dies

New Windsor, MD – IMA World Health mourns the passing of Dr. Vely Martinez Jean Francois of Haiti. According to his sister, Dr. Vely, 65, died from a heart attack in Miami this week while returning from the GAELF Conference in Seoul, South Korea.

Dr. Vely was Coordinator for the Malaria and Lymphatic Filariasis program for the Haitian Ministry of Health and Population since 2007. A former Medical school professor, he worked closely with many faith-based and non-government organizations to improve the health and quality of life for the people of Haiti. He was a strong champion for the eliminantion of Lymphatic Filariasis and a leader for the National Neglected Tropical Disease Control program in Haiti. He will be greatly missed by colleagues around the world.
