IMA World Health/Staff
Have you ever hiked up a mountain? It’s no easy feat for many people.
Today, IMA World Health Communications officer Chris Glass is training to do just that – he is training to climb more than 19,000 feet to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.
On September 2nd 2011 Chris, a native of Carroll County,Md, will attempt to climb to the highest point in Africa in 6 days to raise awareness of Burkitt’s Lymphoma.
Burkitt’s Lymphoma is an aggressive childhood cancer that is prevalent in Tanzania. In fact, many are affected in the area surrounding Mt. Kilimanjaro. It causes extremely painful and disfiguring swelling of the jaw, eyes, face and abdomen, attacks quickly and can be fatal within weeks if not treated promptly and appropriately.
Fortunately, Burkitt’s Lymphoma is treatable with chemotherapy, and the success rates are very high.
IMA World Health, a Faith-Based non-profit in New Windsor, Md, partners with the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in Tanzania and the Ocean Roads Cancer Institute to support a highly successful program to combat this cancer.
On behalf of IMA, he is attempting to do what few of us have an opportunity to do.
Follow along, Chris will be posting updates to his blog as he trains and ultimately attempts to summit the mountain.
If you would like to support the IMA World Health Burkitt’s Lymphoma program, you can make a secure donation online or contact Chris Glass at 1-877-241-7952.
