Recently, 60 people were freed from captivity after heavy fighting between the Democratic Liberation Forces of Rwanda (FDLR) and government forces in the DR. Congo.
The group, mostly women and girls were kidnapped by the FDLR and held for two years before the recent fighting set them free.
The Panzi Foundation immediately sent food and supplies to the village of Kasika in South Kivu province to support the survivors. A health assessment is being made by counselors and medical experts to determine the need for further aid.
The Panzi Foundation is one of IMA World Health’s partners in the USAID-funded Ushindi Project in South and North Kivu, a $16.5 million, five-year mitigation program to address the effects of sexual and gender-based violence.
IMA and the Panzi Foundation work closely with Heal Africa hospitals and the American Bar association to treat and provide counseling for victims of the military and militiamen engaged in the on-going conflict in eastern DR Congo.
