Hygiene Kits to Children in Haiti

Christopher Glass/IMA

Lutheran World Relief and IMA World Health are working together to send 23,000 hygiene kits to Haiti. This is part of a continued effort by both organizations to support the people of Haiti as they recover from the devastating earthquake in January 2010.

Lutheran World Relief donated the kits, and IMA World Health is using its established network of volunteers to distribute them to children across the country.

So far 8,500 kits have been distributed to children in 10 national schools located in the Artibonite department. The rest are scheduled to be distributed by mid-May.

Why are these important?

Good hygiene is important to keeping sickness and infection at bay, especially in places like Haiti where sanitation systems are inadequate and people continue to live in close quarters. These hygiene kits contain all the basic – but essential – materials needed to improve health for children and their family members.

Here is a list of items included in each kit:

  • One hand towel
  • One washcloth
  • One bath-size bar (4 to 5 oz.) of soap, any brand, in its original wrapping
  • One adult-size toothbrush in its original packaging
  • One sturdy comb
  • One metal nail file or nail clippers
  • Six Band-Aids
  • One large tube of toothpaste

Partnerships like this are essential to IMA’s work as we look for efficient and effective ways to improve the health around the world.

What can you do to help?

A donation to IMA World Health can provide medicines and supplies to clinics in need as well as materials to give pregnant women the opportunity for a safe and clean birth.
