Bringing hope and health to women and their babies

MAISHA means "life" in Swahili, and it is also an acronym meaning "Mothers and Infants – Safe, Healthy, Alive."

Launched in Tanzania in 2008, MAISHA is a USAID-funded maternal and newborn child health program. The goal is to improve childbirth survival rates for mothers and increase the number of babies born healthy and safe from disease.

MAISHA is implemented through a consortium led by JHPIEGO. The program is built on previous work through the now-closed USAID-funded Access Project.

Main Components

IMA's role as a partner in the MAISHA consortium is as follows:

  • Strengthen reproductive and child health at faith-based health facilities and in local communities
  • Create essential partnerships within the broad faith-based community, including Christians, Muslims and others
  • Increase ties between government and faith-based facilities.
