Providing essential care to expectant mothers

CPN-Plus is an anonymously funded maternal and newborn child health project providing antenatal services to 750,000 people in a remote part of the Congolese rain forest in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The Equatorial Region of DRC is highly isolated and inaccessible, and for many years its people have been cut off from receiving adequate health care, including essential prenatal care for expectant mothers.

cpn_1_460As in many developing countries, the overall health situation among women and children has been especially dire. With proper antenatal care, mothers and babies have a greater chance of survival and better health both in the short and long terms.

Through CPN-Plus, IMA World Health's activities include:

  • Supporting 25 strategically located clinics in five targeted health zones
  • Providing medicines and vitamins to support antenatal services and prenatal counseling, including examinations and screening tests
  • Supporting supplementary services including literacy training, nutritional support and family planning services
  • Training health care providers in the 25 clinics, building their capacity to provide better services to women and children
