"The time is coming when we will have to think anew," said Dr. Sushant Agrawal, Director of Churches Auxiliary for Social Action (CASA) in India, in an address to IMA headquarters and visiting field staff in New Windsor. CASA has been one of IMA's most important partners in the fight against lymphatic filariasis in India's Orissa State. Created in 1945, CASA promotes community development in many areas including education and health.
Dr. Agrawal, who has served with CASA for 39 years, challenged IMA to think not only in terms of projects but also strategically by expanding a dialogue with partners on issues. Just as a man begging for bread will not see beyond the handout, Dr. Agrawal explained that in the future church and development organizations must address the causes of poverty. "If we do not," he said, "then we will have to account for ourselves to the next generation."
Dr. Agrawal recalled IMA's participation in CASA's Diamond Jubilee and spoke warmly of IMA's 50th anniversary being celebrated this week by saying that "it means much more when we celebrate together." On October 6th IMA will mark its first half century with a gala event hosted by CNN's Gary Tuchman at the Newseum in Washington, D.C.
In his closing words, Dr. Agrawal passionately called upon IMA staff to think about the nature of partnerships and collaboration. "Remember," he said, "together we can transform the world."
